UK Raises National Terror Threat Level to “Severe”
The Embassy of Japan in the Philippines has issued a warning to Japanese residents and travelers, stating that a series of robbery incidents targeting Japanese nationals has occurred in Metro Manila.
At around 3:15 p.m. on April 30, on the sidewalk along Greenhills Shopping Mall in the Greenhills district of San Juan City (near the corner of Ortigas Ave and Wilson St), three Japanese nationals who were walking were suddenly surrounded by five perpetrators. One of the victims had what appeared to be a handgun pointed at them, and their bag was stolen. The five perpetrators fled the scene on three separate motorcycles.
At around 9:20 p.m. on May 2, four Japanese nationals walking along Jose W. Diokno Blvd. South in the Tambo district of Parañaque City (near Kingsford Hotel) were approached by a motorcycle carrying two people. The perpetrator on the back seat got off the bike, pointed what appeared to be a handgun at them, demanded their bags and other belongings, and then fled after stealing bags and other items from three of the four individuals.
The embassy is advising travelers to avoid walking at night as much as possible and to use vehicles for transportation. It also urges people to avoid hailing taxis on the street and instead use ride-hailing services such as Grab. In addition, it calls for vigilance regarding motorcycles carrying two people, recommends carrying bags on the side opposite the roadway or in front of the body, and advises against carrying large amounts of cash or passports.
