Suspected Hantavirus Outbreak on Dutch Expedition Cruise Ship Leaves Three Dead
Oceanwide Expeditions has indicated that its expedition ship Hondius is expected to head for Spain’s Canary Islands.
The ship is currently anchored off Cape Verde, and the three people believed to be infected with hantavirus have not yet been transferred. Their transfer is to be carried out to the Netherlands.
Based on advice from the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) in the Netherlands, two infectious disease specialists are heading from the Netherlands to the ship. Another medical expert is already on board. The voyage to the Canary Islands is expected to take three days.
According to the BBC, Fernando Clavijo, President of the Canary Islands, opposes allowing the ship to call at the islands. It has also been confirmed that one passenger who has already arrived in Switzerland is infected with hantavirus.
Disembarkation points, quarantine and screening procedures for all passengers, and the detailed schedule are reportedly still under discussion.
