ANA Flight Experiences Turbulence Causing Fracture to Crew Member; Classified as Aviation Accident
All Nippon Airways (ANA) announced that flight NH106 from Tokyo/Haneda to Los Angeles on January 8 (Boeing 787-9, tail number: JA892A) encountered turbulence, resulting in a fracture to one cabin crew member. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) of the United States and Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) have recognized it as an aviation accident.
The flight carried a total of 196 people, consisting of 11 crew members and 185 passengers, and departed Tokyo/Haneda at 1:09 AM on the same day. At around 5:40 PM local time on the 7th, approximately 100 kilometers northwest of Los Angeles Airport, while descending at an altitude of 14,000 feet, the seatbelt sign was illuminated, and during a safety check by a cabin crew member, the aircraft encountered turbulence. One cabin crew member was lifted off the ground, landing on her lower back, resulting in an injury. Although initially diagnosed with a sacral contusion at a hospital in Los Angeles, the crew member was later diagnosed with a coccyx fracture at a hospital in Japan on January 10 and 27. Four other cabin crew members also sustained bruises and scratches. The aircraft arrived in Los Angeles at 6:09 PM on the same day, with no defects found on the aircraft.
The cause is under investigation. ANA stated, “We will fully cooperate with investigations by relevant authorities.”
