Montreal Convention Amends Liability Limits
The liability limit under the Montreal Convention, ratified by 140 countries worldwide, has been revised and will come into effect on December 28.
The Montreal Convention establishes the liability of air carriers and the scope of damages in international air transport, with Japan having ratified it in 2000.
It sets the liability limits for passenger death or injury, damage to cargo or baggage, and delays to passengers, with these limits being revised every five years to account for inflation.
Following the amendment, liability for passenger death or injury will be 151,880 SDR (approximately 30.53 million yen), baggage (including delays) at 1,519 SDR (approximately 310,000 yen), cargo (including delays) per kilogram at 26 SDR (approximately 5,226 yen), and delays to passengers at 6,303 SDR (approximately 1.27 million yen).
