Air India’s Board of Directors has appointed Tewolde Gebremariam as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director.
Gebremariam served as CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group for more than a decade, leading a multibillion-dollar expansion. He transformed the regional carrier into Africa’s largest and most profitable airline group. During his tenure, he increased revenue more than fourfold and nearly tripled the size of the fleet. His strengths include managing complex operating environments, transforming organizational culture, building competitive global hubs, and developing world-class MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) and aviation training infrastructure.
N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and Air India, said, “Under Campbell’s leadership, Air India completed the initial stages of stabilization, integration and aircraft ordering, and has now entered a critical era of execution and expansion. Tewolde’s track record of building one of the world’s most efficient and profitable airline groups makes him ideally suited to lead Air India.”
Gebremariam said, “I am deeply honored to be entrusted with the responsibility of leading Air India at this historic turning point. Air India has a remarkable history, and the opportunity to build a world-class airline that reflects India’s extraordinary economic potential is immensely exciting.”
The Board also expressed its appreciation for Campbell Wilson’s leadership during his tenure. He oversaw a complex merger and integration process, launched a major fleet modernization program, and established new corporate governance standards. Details regarding the start date and transition schedule will be announced at a later date.
